AI security solution specialist career guide

an ai security solution specialist reviews ai systems on a computer with a coworker

As companies and organizations race to implement artificial intelligence (AI) into their everyday workflows, they also need cyber security professionals to help them successfully deploy AI tools and agents without data leaks. This is where AI security solution specialists come in. They make up a growing niche of cyber security professionals who help organizations securely adopt AI tools and protect against AI misuse within the organization.

Key takeaways

  • AI security solution specialists help organizations adopt AI safely. They identify vulnerabilities in AI applications, protect sensitive data, implement security measures and help organizations manage AI-related risks.
  • Relevant education, hands-on cyber security experience, knowledge of AI and machine learning, and industry certifications can help you build the skills employers seek.
  • Although the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not track salary and employment data for this specific job title, strong demand for cyber security skills and growing interest in AI security could create opportunities for qualified professionals.

What is an AI security solution specialist?

AI security solution specialists are technology professionals who help organizations protect AI systems, applications and data from cyber security threats. As businesses increasingly adopt AI tools, machine learning models and generative AI applications, these specialists work to identify vulnerabilities, prevent unauthorized access and reduce risks such as data leaks, model manipulation, prompt injection attacks and the misuse of AI systems.

Keep in mind that "AI security solution specialist" isn't a universally standardized job title. Depending on the employer, similar work may fall under AI security engineering, AI security consulting, application security or product-focused security engineering. Some positions emphasize hands-on technical work, while others focus more on consulting with clients and implementing security products.

AI security solution specialists vs. similar roles

It's also worth noting that these professionals differ from other security specialists who simply use AI tools to help protect an organization's broader information technology (IT) environment.

For example, if a company experiences a potential ransomware attack, a cyber security professional might use an AI-powered threat detection platform to identify unusual network activity, flag compromised devices and help contain the attack before it spreads.

AI security solution specialists, on the other hand, focus on selecting and configuring security solutions, establishing safeguards and ensuring AI applications meet the organization's security and compliance requirements.

What do AI security specialists do?

Job responsibilities may vary considerably by employer, but most professionals in this role can generally expect to do the following:

Assess AI security risks:

Identify potential vulnerabilities in AI models, applications and systems before and after deployment.

Implement AI security solutions:

Configure and deploy security tools and controls designed to protect AI applications, models and associated data.

Protect sensitive data:

Help prevent unauthorized access to confidential information that AI systems process, store or generate.

Test AI systems for vulnerabilities:

Conduct security assessments and testing to identify weaknesses, such as prompt injection attacks, data leakage and attempts to manipulate AI model outputs.

Develop AI security protocols:

Recommend security measures, policies and best practices for adopting and managing AI technologies safely.

Monitor AI systems for threats:

Review system activity and security alerts to detect suspicious behavior, potential attacks or unauthorized use of AI applications.

Ensure regulatory compliance:

Help organizations meet applicable data privacy, cyber security and AI governance requirements.

How do you become an AI security solution specialist?

There's no single pathway to becoming an AI security solution specialist. Every employer may have different experience, education and skills requirements for their candidates. That said, here's a general framework if you want somewhere to begin:

Earn a degree.
Many IT and/or cyber security jobs prefer candidates to complete some kind of postsecondary education. An associate or bachelor's degree in cyber security, information systems, computer science or similar disciplines can be a great place to start. Bootcamps are another option if you want a faster, skills-focused education program.
Gain cyber security experience.
It's safe to assume that most AI specialist roles are not entry-level. Getting some experience on a security operations center (SOC) team, as an IT help desk professional, as an incident responder or a penetration tester are just some examples of cyber security roles you may wish to pursue first.
Build relevant skills.
Enhance your knowledge of machine learning, AI governance and related topics to build the skills you'll need to succeed as an AI security solution specialist.
Pursue certifications.
Certifications are a must in the cyber security world. They validate your experience and expertise and could open doors to more advanced cyber security roles.
Stay connected.
Plug into the industry by joining professional organizations, attending networking events and following the latest in AI research to find relevant job opportunities.

Certifications for AI security specialists

Certifications are an important way for cyber security professionals to demonstrate their skills and competencies to employers. Some certifications that you may want to consider pursuing if you're interested in becoming an AI security solution specialist include:

The requirements for earning each certification vary. Most require that you have a certain amount of professional experience in the cyber security and/or IT field plus pass an exam. Check with each individual agency to verify their certification requirements.

How much do AI security solution specialists make?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) doesn't track salary and employment data for AI security solution specialists specifically, but they do report that the median annual salary for information security specialists—which is the most closely related professional group—is $129,180.

Actual salaries may be even greater if companies are willing to pay top-dollar for the right candidate with the skills and competencies they're looking for. In ISC2's 2025 Cybersecurity Workforce Study, survey respondents said that AI was their most pressing skill need (41%).

"The ability to use AI in threat detection and response was the most highly rated AI-specific skill, cited by 42% of respondents, followed by AI in threat modeling and risk assessment (39%)," the report states. "Infrastructure and policy ranked very high, underlining the importance of defending the actual AI systems alongside using AI as part of a wider cybersecurity tool set. Defending AI models from attack was considered important by more than a third (35%), with securing AI integrations in cloud and edge deployments (31%) followed by AI governance and policy implementation (30%)."

Still, individual salaries vary considerably depending on one's education, experience, location, employer and more.

What's the job outlook like?

There are a lot of competing narratives when it comes to the job outlook for cyber security professionals. On the one hand, official employment projections from the BLS are strong: they anticipate that the employment of information security analysts will grow a whopping 21% through 2035.

On the other hand, we know that cyber security professionals were not immune to the massive tech layoffs of the last few years. However, ISC2's 2025 Cybersecurity Workforce Study came to an optimistic conclusion about the future of the field based on the data they collected.

"While respondents continue to highlight issues with budget constraints, staffing levels and investment in people and supporting resources, 2025 has seen the first signs that the situation is starting to level out rather than get considerably worse," the report writes.

"...those within the cybersecurity workforce who are actively using AI tools are positive about the current and future impact of the technology, seeing opportunities for skills development, along with the creation of more and new jobs."

In addition, professionals that understand how to use and leverage AI may have even more opportunities.

"AI is redefining both cybercrime and cybersecurity. However, far from being daunted, those within the cybersecurity workforce who are actively using AI tools are positive about the current and future impact of the technology, seeing opportunities for skills development, along with the creation of more and new jobs. They continue to see a symbiotic future where AI enhances the cybersecurity working experience rather than replacing skilled personnel," the report explains.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What degree do you need to become an AI security solution specialist?
